This is what Autism looks like

Hi there, I thought I'd take the opportunity to challenge some of the stereotypes and myths around being autistic:

I can talk, I've been told "eloquently". I can make eye contact (maybe too much for some people as I find it's like staring into someone's soul) and I don't look obviously awkward in social situations (that's a lifetime of practice, self-awareness and self-acceptance, healthy boundaries created and held and tactics pre-decided if needs must).

I love the healing magic of Mother Nature and I'm happy to try out weird and wonderful things, including prancing around in a field in a dress for a photoshoot! Why not, life can be FUN if we choose! Fun = feel-good hormones, endorphins and serotonin, which is what we can all do with more of in our lives right now! Sunshine = Vit D. What's not to like?

Myself and some of my family now identify as twice-exceptional 2E.

As a child I was great academically but never felt I fit in. I felt I was the "geeky shy chinese girl" to those who didn't know me. My close friends were and still are some of the most wonderful and kind humans on earth and it's because of them and my amazing mum that I made it through school pretty unscathed.

I can tell you now, that's NOT the case for most autistic girls in the school system right now who are sadly being traumatised daily.

It's really confusing when you find some things easy and other things really hard! Who do you turn to? Luckily, social media now has lots of neurodivergent voices and advocates.

I look forward to a massive upheaval in the out-of-date education system. I know it will take time but I believe that it will happen and that our generation is lighting the flame so that the next generation will create even bigger shifts to support all neurotypes.

We all are perfect as we are, we all deserve to feel safe and be happy.
